Rather than criticizing their choices, it’s best to extend support that they can then choose to accept. This is especially true when we’re considering making decisions that could further traumatize them. Encounters with police officers — including wellness or welfare checks — can be terrifying, and in some cases, have turned deadly, particularly for Black people and people of color.
